Antiziganism is a common phenomenon on the big screen. To examine this issue from various perspectives, acclaimed scholars and junior researchers, filmmakers and human rights activists, both Roma and non-Roma, gathered in Berlin in 2018 and presented their research output, shared personal testimonies and discussed films at the international conference “Antigypsyism and Film“.
The present bilingual volume is a documentation of the conference proceedings. It contains academic articles and essays as well as interviews with filmmakers grouped in four thematic sections: antigypsyism in film, the question of ethics, strategies of subversion and antigypsyism in comparison to other forms of racism.
Radmila Mladenova is a literary and film scholar, pursuing a PhD degree at Heidelberg University’s Institute of Slavic Studies with her research project The ‘White’ Mask and the ‘Gypsy’ Mask in Film. She graduated in English and American Studies at Sofia University, and Culture in the Process of Modernity at Mannheim University. Her research interests lie at the intersection of racism and art.
Tobias von Borcke helped establish the Educational Forum Against Antigypsyism at the Documentation and Cultural Centre of German Sinti and Roma. Among other things, he was involved in organising the conference “Antigypsyism and Film” documented in this volume.
Pavel Brunssen is a PhD student in the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures at the University of Michigan. His research interests include: antisemitism, antigypsyism, and European football fan cultures. He earned his MA at the Centre for Research on Antisemitism at the Technical University of Berlin and his BA in social work and social pedagogy at Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences.
Markus End is a social scientist with a research focus on the phenomenon of antigypsyism. Currently, he serves as a member of the Independent Commission on Antigypsyism at the Ministry of the Interior and presides over the Society for the Research of Antigypsyism.
Anja Reuss is a political advisor at the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma. She completed her Master's degree in Educational Science and Modern European History with a focus on National Socialism, Genocide Studies, Migration and Minority History at the Humboldt University in Berlin. Her research interests include: dimensions of antigypsyism, memory politics, minority rights, policing, hate crime and data collection.
