Riot was the most widespread and successful form of popular politics at the turn of the eighteenth century in England and Wales. John Bohstedt’s comprehensive examination of collective violence during the period demonstrates why. Using statistical analysis of six hundred riots and carefully drawn comparative case studies, Bohstedt shows that English riots were shaped by a kind of “protocol of riot”—by calculable conventions that varied with the textures of community politics. From the classic small towns of Devon to the industrial boom town of Manchester to the “quiet” countryside, riot was a constituent element in the local landscape of power and conflict.

Bohstedt breaks new ground by analyzing the contrasts between the nature of riots in different kinds of communities and by using those contrasts to reveal the inner connections between the discipline, frequency, and success of eighteenth-century riots.
